Laser Cladding (LMD)
Laser cladding, also known as Laser Metal Deposition (LMD), is an additive manufacturing method used to apply metallic coatings to components to improve their properties or repair damaged surfaces. The process involves feeding metal powder into a melt pool generated by a high-intensity laser beam. Unlike other coating processes, such as thermal spraying, the filler material fuses with the base material.
Laser cladding also provides a much lower dilution rate with the base material compared with conventional overlay welding, which results in better properties in the surface layer.
-
Advantages of laser cladding
- Minimal heat input: The concentrated laser beam limits the size of the heat-affected zone, which minimises distortion and preserves the component’s original properties.
- High precision: The method enables precise deposition of material, which is particularly beneficial for complex geometries and sensitive areas.
- Versatility in material selection: A wide range of metal powders can be used, including high-performance alloys that improve corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and wear resistance. This also includes ceramic surface layers.
- Strong bonding: The metallurgical bond between the coating and the base material ensures high strength and long service life.
-
Applications
- Repair and refurbishment: Restoring worn or damaged components such as turbine blades, shafts, and moulds, extending their service life and reducing the need for costly replacements.
- Surface enhancement: Applying wear-resistant or corrosion-resistant layers to new components to improve performance in demanding environments.
- Mixed material properties: Combining different materials in the same product to achieve “the right property in the right place”.
- Additive manufacturing: Building complex structures layer by layer, enabling the manufacture of customised parts with high precision.
